View Full Version : UDM4 page that won't load in Firefox for Mac

08-22-2007, 04:59 AM
Hi and thanks for putting this Forum up!

I've used UDM4 before; I now have a new project, and it looks good in all the browser incarnations I've tried it in except Firefox-Mac, where it hangs up before the page is all rendered.

A good Mac-using friend tested it out this morning and found that it would load in that browser only if he commented out 'udm-custom.js'. I've checked over the edits I made to that file and I don't see anything out of line.

So after I send this message, I'll try pasting that JS file into a second message so it can be viewed easily, hoping that someone can see what's wrong with it.

My site -- strictly a skeleton so far -- is at http://ruhaniat.org/DeMo4TeSt --

Greatly appreciate any help with this issue.

Peace -- Howard

Sorry to hear about the problem. What happens if you replace your udm-custom.js with the original? Do you still see the same problems? Do you see these problems on the Sliding Menus Extension (http://www.udm4.com/demos/extension-sliding.php) on this site?

As I don't have a Mac, a friend tested these for me in Firefox-Mac.

http://ruhaniat.org/DeMo4TeSt/nocust.htm (with the 'stock' version of udm-custom..js -- "loads without hanging and presents a statically positioned menu in upper left corner, and for the choices with subchoices, the subchoices slide out to the right."

http://ruhaniat.org/DeMo4TeSt/noslide.htm (with link to sliding menus script commented out but using my edited version of udm-custom) ... "presents the page, with a blank box where the menu ought to be, and the mouse changes from arrow to linking finger in some places in it -- probably the areas where the subchoice menus are, but the browser hangs and needs to be shut down to clear it."

Thanks so much for looking at this, and I hope it's easy to fix!

Could you try this out and let me know if it works...

Mac FF has a problem / difficulty with fixed positioning. Changing this to absolute might solve the problem.

your current code:

um.orientation = [
"vertical", // alignment ["vertical"|"horizontal"|"popup"|"expanding"]
"left", // h align ["left"|"right"]
"top", // v align ["top"|"bottom"]
"fixed", // positioning ["relative"|"absolute"|"fixed"|"allfixed"]
"3em", // x position ["em"|"ex"|"px"|"0"]
"220px", // y position ["em"|"ex"|"px"|"0"]
"1000", // z order ["0" to "10000"] (menu takes 20000 headroom)

change the "fixed" to "absolute"

um.orientation = [
"vertical", // alignment ["vertical"|"horizontal"|"popup"|"expanding"]
"left", // h align ["left"|"right"]
"top", // v align ["top"|"bottom"]
"absolute", // positioning ["relative"|"absolute"|"fixed"|"allfixed"]
"3em", // x position ["em"|"ex"|"px"|"0"]
"220px", // y position ["em"|"ex"|"px"|"0"]
"1000", // z order ["0" to "10000"] (menu takes 20000 headroom)

You're right, it's apparently the "fixed" parameter that chokes FF-Mac. I changed it to "absolute" and now it loads fine in that browser (I had my friend test it). So bummer! With this change, I lose the functionality I wanted -- the menu doesn't stay put in the viewport !! But I do need to make my page work in as many browsers as possible.

Do you know of any way to work around this, have my cake and eat it too?

Thanks again -- Howard

This isn't tested, but you might try some external CSS to get the menu to stay put...

Something like...

ul#udm {
position:fixed !important;

of course, no guarantees that would work cross browser. But it might be worth a shot.

Well, I left 'absolute' rather than 'fixed' in that section of udm-custom.js;

I added " ul#udm {position:fixed !important;} " to the CSS;

... and again it caused FF-Mac to hang.

So we know that's the item that the browser chokes on. Sounds like my next step is to contact the FireFox support site about the fact that Firefox for Mac apparently can't handle this code, which works in all the other browsers I know of specifically including FF-Windows (which is my usual browser).

Sound reasonable?

Thanks for your help -- HB

Hi Bcarl and all

Thanks. Turns out this bug in Firefox for Mac is a known issue that's been in Bugzilla for months. Unfortunately no one is working on it, I'm the only one who's ever 'voted' for fixing it.

Here's the link (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?query_format=specific&order=relevance+desc&bug_status=__open__&id=375489)

I don't know anyone who's involved with the Mozilla project, so I guess I'm kind of stuck with non-fixed menus.
