revert main menu properties during submenu hover

Does anyone know how to get the properties (color, background color, etc) of the main menu items to revert back to their original properties when the user is hovering on a submenu item of that particular main menu item? I would like my hover properties to apply ONLY to the subitem item I am hovering over, not to all of the items that are linked to that subitem hierarchally.
