Using entirely separate CSS files for IE

Do you pros use a conditional comment to force the different browsers into using a completely different CSS file? How painful is it to keep all the different CSS files accurate/updated? Due to the nonsense that IE has been putting me through I just want to provide a basic layout for anyone using...
